WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey expressed optimism that half of Senate Republicans will vote for bipartisan gun control legislation.
This is the same legislation that he and a small group of Republican senators are currently negotiating.
Toomey spoke with CBS’s Margaret Brennan during an interview on Sunday’s Face the Nation broadcast.
During the interview, Toomey told Brennan that the intensive discussions underway in the aftermath of the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings had involved people who had not been involved in the process before.
Brennan then asked if Toomey believed he could get the six other negotiating Republican senators to vote for any proposed legislation.
My hope is we’ll get a lot more than that,” Toomey responded. “My hope is we’ll get at least half the Republican conference. You know that that’s, that should be the goal here. We’re going to have to be realistic about what can do that. Senator (Chris) Murphy (D-NJ) alluded to the idea that it’s not going to be everything. Certainly the Democrats would like. We’ll- we’ll see where it ends up.”
Toomey also told Brennan that expanded background checks were on the table in negotiations between the senators on both sides of the aisle.
In addition to his optimistic-sounding comments, Toomey, who announced in 2020 that he was not seeking reelection for Senate this year, expressed frustration at President Biden’s rhetorical posturing during current gun control proposals.
As we reported to you yesterday, the President and fellow Democrats are signaling that they will not be willing to compromise with congressional Republicans but will try to pass the maximum gun control.
“Since day one, he has sided with the far left of his party and really not reached out to Republicans,” Toomey said. “He gave a speech on this topic where he advocated policies that he knows for sure have no chance of passing the Senate probably couldn’t even get 50 votes, and hold the Democrats much less get the 60 we would need. So once again, the President is not being very helpful.”
Just to make sure eveyrbody was tracking….this career Republican politicians is upset that Joe Biden and his handlers won’t meet Toomey and his friends in the middle on gun control!
The only negotiations that should occur anywhere among any governing body are how best to pave the way for increased armed security in schools, including providing training and allowing trained school staff and teachers to carry.
This would be consistent with most responders in a recently published poll by the Trafalgar Group.
But not in the Swamp! The anti-gun left is intent on destorying the Second Amendment via a ‘death of a thousands cuts’ and RINOS like Toomey are happy to offer up what they consider to be unimportant parts for surgical removal.
Meanwhile, our children, school staff, and teachers at the front line will be sitting ducks for the next school shooter, who will somehow have acquired their guns despite all of Washington’s laws.
The only thing lawmakers will have to show for it will be obstructing law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.
Do not let this happen. Take 30 seconds to let your legislators know that you will not tolerate them negotiating or siding with the anti-gun left by filling out the form below which was provided to us by the American Firearms Association.
