Biden Renews Call For Assault Weapons Ban While Celebrating The Passage of Biggest Gun Control Bill In Thirty Years

WASHINGTON D.C.- President Joe Biden vowed to press forward with his agenda to renew a ban on assault weapons, he announced during a celebration of the recently passed Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on the White House South Lawn on Monday.

Assault weapons need to be banned.  They were banned.  I led the fight in 1994,” Biden said in his remarks to the crowd.  And then, under pressure from the NRA and the gun manufacturers and others, that ban was lifted in 2004.  In that ten years, it was law, mass shootings went down.  When the law expired in 2004 and those weapons were allowed to be sold again, mass shootings tripled.  They’re the facts.  I’m determined to ban these weapons again, and high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds and that let mass shooters fire hundreds of bullets in a matter of minutes.  I’m not going to stop until we do it.”

As we reported to you in May, a 2004 federally funded study of the assault weapons ban the President spoke of could not credit the ban with the nation’s drop in gun violence.

The President’s rhetoric on Monday confirmed the fears of Second Amendment advocates, who expressed deep concern that the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act would serve as a placeholder bill for further action to be taken up by anti-gun Democrats later.

“Senator (Chris) Murphy (D- Conn.) has said: When you look at the biggest social issues America has faced throughout our history, quote, ‘Success begets success.’  And that’s when you, quote, “finally move that mountain.”  You can — you can ignite a movement when you do that for more progress to follow,” Biden said.  “We have finally moved that mountain — a mountain of opposition, obstruction, and indifference that has stood in the way and stopped every effort at gun safety for 30 years in this nation.”

As we reported to you last month, Democrats almost immediately began referring to the bill as a “beginning” that would “pave the way” for “more progress” on the gun control issue.

The South Lawn celebration came even though the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was rendered virtually impotent thanks to Robert Crimo III’s shooting spree, which left seven dead during a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Even some gun control advocates were critical of the optics that an administration celebration in light of the Highland Park mass shooting presented.

“There’s simply not much to celebrate here,” Gun Down America President Igor Volsky told the Associated Press.  “It’s historic, but it’s also the very bare minimum of what Congress should do.  And as we were reminded by the shooting on July 4, and there’s so many other gun deaths that have occurred since then, the crisis of gun violence is just far more urgent.”

The celebration did not go off without a hitch, as the President found himself heckled during his remarks by the parent of a 17-year-old who was killed in the Parkland mass shooting.  

The South Lawn ceremony comes at a particularly desperate time for the Biden Administration.  Fox News reported that a new New York Times/ Siena College poll showed that a staggering 64 percent of Democratic voters do not want President Biden to seek reelection in the 2024 electionhttps://www.foxnews.com/politics/majority-democrats-dont-want-biden-run-again-2024-poll-finds. 

The poll surveyed 849 registered voters from July 5-7 and cited the President’s age as the most important reason, at 33 percent.  Closely behind is Biden’s job performance at 32 percent, with 12 percent “simply just wanting somebody new,” according to Fox News.  Only 26 percent of respondents told pollsters that the Democrats should renominate Biden in 2024.

Also serving as harrowing news for the administration from the poll: only 13 percent of Americans believe the country is on the right track.  In comparison, Biden’s job approval rating sank to 33 percent.

“The opposition to Biden from within the Democratic Party appeared the strongest among those under the age of 20, with an overwhelming 94 percent saying they want someone else to be the nominee in the 2024 presidential election, according to the New York Times,” Fox News reported.

OUR TAKE:

We’d bet that every gun owner in the country knew that the Democrats and their RINO colleagues would not stop at the recent bipartisan bill.

About the only people who liked that bill were opportunistic Democrats who were thinking far enough ahead to use it as a springboard to tighter gun control regulation later and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R- Ky.), who told reporters he was using it to gain a GOP foothold among the Karens of Suburbia.

Now they are coming for ‘assault weapons’.
