Biden Signs Gun Control Into Law – Most Significant Gun Control Legislation In Thirty Years

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Early this Saturday morning, Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law, the most significant piece of gun control legislation in decades.

The bill passed the Senate late Thursday evening and Nancy Pelosi’s House Friday morning, making the journey to Biden’s desk in under 36 hours.

While this bill doesn’t do everything I want, it does include actions I’ve long called for that are going to save lives,” Joe Biden said. “It funds crisis intervention, including red-flag laws.  It keeps guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves and to others.  And it finally closes what is known as the ‘boyfriend loophole.’  So if you assault your boyfriend or girlfriend, you can’t buy a gun or own a gun.”

The signing of the bill into law marks the end of a whirlwind week that saw 14 Republican senators cross party lines to vote in favor of the bill, which pro-Second Amendment advocates referred to as a traitorous act of betrayal.  2ADailyNews.com provided a breakdown of the legislation in an article published earlier this week.

Biden hinted during his remarks that this bill would not be the last activity on the subject of gun control.

“I know there’s much more work to do, and I’m never going to give up,” Biden said.

The President’s rhetoric matches his Democratic compatriots.  As we reported to you earlier this week, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), in their appearances on cable news this week, referred to S. 2938 as a bill that paves the way for more progress on gun control in the future. 

These statements confirm concerns by Second Amendment rights groups such as the American Firearms Association, whose Executive Director, Chris Dorr, yesterday referred to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act as a “placeholder bill.”

A placeholder bill is one which is passed quickly so that it can be used as a ‘chassis’ to add more language to later, expanding the existing law significantly.

Gun owners hardly have time to sit around and sulk about the monstrous betrayals of the last week, but there are key lessons to be learned. 

We must never forget the names of the senators and representatives of those who betrayed us, and we must work to bring their political careers to an end.

Gun owners must and actively support candidates at every level of government who not only stand firm in the face of attacks on our Second Amendment rights but will have the guts to advance those rights into law aggressively.

For the senators and representatives that did not betray us, we must show them the high political price that their traitorous colleagues will pay for their actions.

There is much to be done, especially given that Democrats have made no secret of their wish to revisit this issue and get more stringent gun control laws passed and signed by the President.
