WASHINGTON- In a reintroduction of what could be the most significant gun control attempt since Joe Biden took office, a group of senators led by Cory Booker (D-NJ) has filed the Federal Firearms Licensing Act.
If passed, this bill would fundamentally alter the Second Amendment as we know it.
Politico reported in its Huddle roundup article on the day’s congressional news that the legislation would require those who wish to purchase a firearm to get a license from the Department of Justice before buying or receiving one.
This bill moves us in the right direction and is based on a simple concept – if you need a license to drive a car, you should need one to buy and possess a gun,” Booker said in a statement on his website. This is the moment to enact ambitious legislation – as a nation, we must rise to it, or we are fated to witness the deadly scenes of this past weekend and years past over again.”
Booker is being joined in his efforts by Sens. Bob Menendez (D- N.J.) and Richard Blumenthal (D- Conn.), the latter of whom attracted some national attention in 2015 for falsely claiming he served as a Marine reservist in Vietnam while never actually leaving the country.
An Assault on The Second Amendment
The text of Booker’s bill reveals a massive centralization of Federal power over the gun buying and owning process.
If the bill were to pass, it would authorize the Attorney General to “establish a federal system for issuing a federal firearms license to eligible individuals.”
Those applying for a license will have to submit to a background check and have to submit their fingerprints to the federal government, which, according to the bill, will then be placed into the FBI’s Rap Back Program.
The applicant for the federal license will also be required to complete both a written test and a hands-on test to demonstrate both knowledges of written gun laws and safe and accurate use of the firearm.
As for the firearm itself, the Booker bill would require that the applicant submit the make, model, and the serial number of the firearm they intend to buy and the name of the firearm seller they intend to buy it from.
Should the license from the Federal Government be approved, the license will only be suitable for the purchase of a single firearm. It must be purchased within 30 days after the license is finally issued.
The license itself is good for only five years.
According to the bill, the applicant can be denied a license in cases where they have had a history of using threats or committing acts of violence against themselves or others. The bill would allow for the denial of a license in cases of arrests ranging from violent crimes to cruelty to animals.
In what some would describe as a Catch-22, the bill allows the prospective gun owner to be denied a license for “any recent purchase of firearms, ammunition, or other deadly weapons.”
Should any applicant get through all of that to be granted a license, the bill would allow the Attorney General to subject them to regular background checks, resulting in revocation. The bill gives the Attorney General power to “establish procedures to ensure that any firearm is removed from any individual when the individual’s license is revoked.
Radical Leftists Were Waiting to Pounce
This is not the first time Booker has introduced the Federal Firearm Licensing Act. In 2019, Booker introduced similarly worded legislation to the 116th Congress. That bill, S. 2449, was read twice before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 10th, 2019, and no further action was taken.
Aaron Dorr, Executive Director of the American Firearms Association, commented on the situation on an internet broadcast yesterday, saying:
The radical left has been waiting for this moment for a very long time. They literally have these playbooks in their file cabinet waiting for a mass shooting. Before the blood is even dried up on the floor, they have that thing out, and they’re ready to rock and roll.”
OUR TAKE
In the face of possible midterm election losses all over the country, America-hating Democrats seem to be throwing a massive gun control bill at the wall and seeing what will stick!
The Federal Firearms Licensing Act is not just an expansion of bureaucratic red tape. It’s the chains of tyranny, tying the hands of free men.
While Politico describes Booker’s bill as being launched in the face of “long legislative odds,” we cannot be so dismissive concerning what this Congress and this president are capable of.
Last night, the House of Representatives passed the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act in a mostly party-line vote.
If that bill can be passed out of the House, who is to say that Booker’s wouldn’t get out of the Senate, provided it survives committee?
Especially given that the usually reliable Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia is talking openly about passing gun-control legislation, and Kamala Harris waiting in the wings to possibly break any tie if the filibuster is lost.
Freedom-loving, law-abiding gun owners must speak up and speak loudly now more than ever to defend their rights. Call, email, or write your Congressional representatives and pressure them to resist the Booker bill.
