TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.- Leftist filmmaker Michael Moore published a proposal to replace the Second Amendment with the 28th Amendment on his website banning all automatic and semi-automatic weapons and placing Congress in charge of nearly every aspect of the gun buying process.
Citing “the inalienable right of a free people to be kept safe from gun violence and the fear thereof,” Moore outlined eight sections of leftist gun-control proposals.
Under Moore’s proposal, the minimum age of firearms purchase would be 25 years old, assuming that a person clears the copious amounts of red tape requirements for the said gun owner are satisfied.
“All who seek a firearm will undergo a strict vetting process with a thorough background check, including the written and confidential approval of family members, spouses and ex-spouses and/or partners and ex-partners, co-workers and neighbors,” Moore wrote. “A mental health check will also be required. There will be a waiting period of one month to complete the full background check.”
The reader should note that Payton Gendron, Salvador Ramos, and Robert Crimo III all passed background checks before purchasing firearms. The reader should also note that Crimo III had assistance from his father, who signed the consent form allowing his son to buy guns, as ABC News reported.
Moore also proposed that Congress create a mandatory system of firearms registration that limits the use of firearms to hunting, target shooting, and “for the few who can demonstrate a special need for personal protection,” the latter declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court last month.
In addition to automatic and semi-automatic weapons, Moore’s “amendment” also calls for the outright banning any gun or magazine that can hold more than six bullets and so-called “ghost guns.”
Far from limiting the congressional reach of what kinds of guns can be purchased, Moore’s proposal would extend it to how the gun-owner store their firearms by putting Congress in charge of regulating all ammunition, the storage of guns, and gun locks.
No weapons of any kind whose sole intention is the premeditated elimination of human life are considered legal,” Moore wrote. “Congress may create future restrictions as this amendment specifically does not grant any American the ‘right’ to own any weapon.”
Finally, Moore proposed that any gun owner possessing any firearm banned by his “amendment” would have one month to turn the offending weapon to law enforcement for destruction.
OUR TAKE
Our readers are correct in rolling their eyes and saying “Who cares?” to pretty much anything far-left elitist Michael Moore says.
Yet the gun owner should take the worldview he represents very seriously as it is shared by Democrats and an increasing number of RINOs in Congress.
Gun owners shouldn’t assume that other people are ignoring outspoken anti-gun elitists like Moore.
Leftists such as Moore believe ultimately that the Constitution should enable people to live in freedom from fear. The patriotic gun-owner knows the Constitution is rooted in the worldview expressed by the Declaration of Independence, allowing them to go after “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Moore’s proposal is ultimately dangerous because it assumes that Congress is a morally neutral agent that will justly and fairly execute this law. If Moore is naïve (and we indeed hold out that possibility), it is as though the last two-plus years did not happen.
If Moore is not naïve, we can file this “amendment” under another instance of leftist Democrats attempting to disarm their political opponents.
Gun owners understand that neither case is good and that one of the best ways to combat further infringement of their Second Amendment rights is by joining no-compromise gun organizations to make their voices heard loud and clear.
