The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) is actively encouraging states to adopt Red Flag Gun Confiscation Orders, commonly referred to as Red Flag laws.
In an email obtained by Gun News Now, Jessica Vanderpool—NSA’s Director of Grants & Contracts—alerted sheriffs’ association directors about an online training session held on October 14. The training was led by Sheriff Dawanna Witt of Hennepin County, Minnesota, a state that currently enforces a Red Flag law.
Red Flag laws allow firearms to be seized from individuals who have not been charged with or convicted of a crime. Critics argue these laws bypass due process protections and expand law enforcement authority in ways that violate constitutional rights.
According to the email, Vanderpool’s message was forwarded to all Idaho sheriffs by Jeff Lavey, Executive Director of the Idaho Sheriffs’ Association, at the request of the NSA.
Idaho stands apart from many states by prohibiting its legislature from enacting gun confiscation laws unless a felony has been committed. However, concerns remain about potential loopholes that could undermine this protection.
