Amendment to Remove Suppressors from NFA Clears U.S. House

The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act.

Gun owners have long argued that the NFA is unconstitutional. With suppressors, it never made sense that the NFA regulated a device that helps protect hearing.

The amendment is part of H.R. 1, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

Gun owners have criticized Republicans for decades for not making any meaningful steps towards restoring the Second Amendment. Typically, when Republicans have a trifecta of control at the federal level, they do absolutely nothing for gun owners.

As the bill was being debated and amendments offered, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R—GA) fought to remove the transfer and sale tax in the House Ways and Means Committee and to remove the registration requirement altogether. Clyde was successful, and the House narrowly passed the measure 215 to 214.

Gun Owners of America Senior Vice President Erich Pratt said after the passage,

Eliminating the suppressor registration and tax is a major step forward for liberty and safety. This would not have happened without Rep. Clyde’s resolve and strategic leadership. Gun owners have one less unconstitutional hurdle to worry about—but we’re not done. The Senate needs to deliver on President Trump’s campaign promise to protect gun owners from another ban on short-barreled firearms like the Biden Pistol Brace Ban.”

The bill moves to the Senate, where essentially no Republican defections can take place, or it may die.

As a reminder, Rep. Eric Burlison’s (R – MO) bill, H.R. 335, to repeal the NFA in its entirety, still sits in the Republican-controlled House Ways and Means Committee.
